Recently I have watched the film"The Lengend of 1900". It tells the story of a pianist who spent all his life on a ship. When he was a baby, he was left on the ship. A worker on the ship found him, raised him, and named him after the year 1900. When he was a boy, he played around on the ship and slided into the party room. There he was attracted by the piano. After the party, he played the piano and people were amazed at his playing. As he grew up, he became the pianist of the ship. His friend advised him to get off the ship to begin a new life on the land, and once he tried, but he gave up at last. In the end, he stayed on the ship when people planed to destroy the old ship. I was impressed by the film in two ways. The first is how well 1900 played his piano. He observed different people on the ship, imagined their stories and played the music in the same moods. Listening to his music is like listening to a story or watching a play. The most wonderful music is the one he created when he first saw the girl he fell in love with. At the beginning of the music, it was unmindful, like a person wandering around. Then suddenly he got a glimpse of a beautiful girl near the window, and he was attracted by her. The music began to soften, just like his heart. The girl brought all the good things and joy to him. I could imagine the picture of his walking in the sunshine or sitting on the grassland with the girl. I couldn't help listening to the music again and again. Every time I would feel sweet and smile at the end. The other thing made me think a lot is that 1900 never got off the ship. He tried once, but failed. In the end, when the company decided to destroy the ship, his friend found him and tried to persuade him to get off the ship. He told the friend why he quited at the last moment of going to the land several years ago. He said, "It was not what I saw that scared me, but what I didn't see. It's the end. There is no end on the land." At that time I began to understand what kept 1900 on the ship. It's the fear of uncertainty. He was wondering where his home would be and what his future would be like. But instead of dream and excitement, all he had was anxiety. What confuses me most is that every trip on the ship was a new one and on each trip he met different people. Only the ship was constant. So, besides the environment in which he lived, what's the difference between the land and the ship? Then I realize that many people leave their hometown or the place they live long to a new place, which is just like 1900's getting off the ship to the land. When an old environment or an old lifestyle becomes a habit, a custom, people get used to it and would find it hard to make a change. But only when we step out of the zone in which we feel contented can we make some progress. Whether it's a success or failure, it will be a meaningful experience and makes us grow up. If 1900 got off the ship, maybe he would feel frustrated at the life in the city , or feel confused after great success and fame. Or, the new life may bring him many inspirations and he would creat much more music. I think 1900 lacked a spirit of adventure. Unlike 1900, I'd like to make some change. After my college education , I found a job in another city to begin a new stage of life. My friends, do you have the will and courage to make a change? Do you have some moments of making such big decisions? If so, please tell me your story.

A few days ago I went to the Summer Palace. After entering the park, we can either go north or south to see the scenery. I used to choose the north route and go through the Long Corridor and by the Stone Boat. This time I wanted to make a change, so I went south to see the 17-Arch Bridge and the West Dam(Xi Di). A few miles from the gate, there was a very small island. Standing on the island, I saw the Longevity Hill(Wan Shou Shan), and I heard some people singing together. It was sunny that day, but a little chilly. In the Kunming Lake there were half ice and half water. The ice made the lake peaceful while the water brought vitality to it.The breeze and sunshine made the lake very shiny, like wavering silk. Some miles away, There was the famous 17-Arch Bridge. Every time I saw the bridge I would count the arches to check if the number is 17. Of course it doesn't change! There are hundreds of stone lions on the bridge, and every one has a unique posture. At last I got to the West Dam. It was a imitation of the dam in the West Lake in Hangzhou. They are several bridges and pavilions built on the West Dam. When I got there, I was a little tired, but I felt that it was worth the long walk when I enjoyed the good view.Since the pavilions were bulit a few meters above the Kunming Lake, we could see the whole lake, the buildings around it and the mountains far away.At that time it was still cold outside. When it's warm, the willow leaves will turn out and the peach trees will blossom, and they will make the West Dam more beautiful.(The followings are two photos taken in the Summer Palace. One is a photo of the Longevity Hill taken on the small island; the other is a photo of the 17-Arch Bridge taken on the West Dam.)

Love ourselves

2018-01-27

Recently I've read Louise. Hay 's books "You can heal your life" and "The power is within you" again and they made me think a lot. After I got ill, I reflected my life. In the past few years, I tried to be perfect in all parts of my life. I tried to be excellent in my study and work. I was nice to all people. I'm a good person. As the Chinese old saying goes, good people will be well all their life. So, Why it's me? Why am I so unlucky? I'm really frustrated and depressed. Ms. Hay's books shed some light on my problem. I love and care others more than myself. I studied in most of my spare time because I wanted to get straight "A"s on my study. I always wondered whether other people would be happy or not if I said or did something, but I seldom asked myself, "am I happy? am I tired?" I didn't love myself enough. The disease is a sign that I should change my pattern of thinking and living. I need to love myself more and give myself some time to relax. I can go outside to enjoy the sunshine, beautiful flowers and birds' singing. On our life journey, there are many things for us to appreciate besides work. However, I used to pursue the success and achievement and didn't realize it. Now I want to slow down my pace of life and learn to get the balance and find the tranquility. Maybe meditation will help me. It's a good way to get rid of the old negative ideas and form new positive ideas. As pointed out in the books, anger, criticism, sense of guilt and fear are the most common negative attitudes. We need to let these ideas go just like things floating away in a river. After that, we can embrace new positive ideas. As to forming new ideas in our mind, Ms. Hay advised the readers to give affirmations to themselves, such as "I love myself, I love my body." " I deserve all the good things."etc. These affirmations will be positive to our subconsciousness and have a miraculous effect on our life. To love others, we first have to learn how to love ourselves. When we love ourselves enough, we will take care of our bodies and have good self-respect and self-esteem. This provides a good way in the treatment of diseases and addiction. What's more, if all of us love ourselves, other people and the world, the world will be more beautiful and peaceful!

After I read “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, I read an old book” Standing on the Edge of Two Worlds” once again. Last year I firstly knew the book from the “2014 Good Books of China” festival, then I downloaded it on kindle APP and read it. I was greatly impressed and moved by the author Hao Cheng, and I have read it several times. For some unknown reason, Mr. Cheng has never walked since he was born. In his twenty years’ short life, he was “a professional patient” and “an amateur writer”. In the book, he wrote about his childhood life, his view of life and society, and his friendship with net friends. However, he seldom wrote about his illness and pain. He struggled to live better instead of complaining about the fate. He knew that his life would be short (doctors once said that he could only live as long as 5 years), but he didn’t waste the time and be pessimistic, instead, he treasured his time and studied hard. Once upon a time, he read about 100,000 to 200,000 words every day. He took some notes every day and began to write. A sentence he once wrote down is now very famous on the internet. It was that the real cool thing is not the success that you can be proud of but the smile you still have when you are in difficult times. Mr.Cheng’s optimistic attitude about life greatly inspired me and led me to think a lot about life. We may face different difficulties in our life, and in most of the time we can’t avoid but have to face them and go through. Rather than being worried about our life’s length, we can broaden our life’s breadth and do many meaningful things. My dear friends, I sincerely recommend you to read this book. You may get power from it and begin to think about the meaning of your life.

Learning English

2016-08-10

At April I came across a good book called “ To Use Your English”. It’s about the English learning methods. The author said that by observing babies we can find that only a mount of input would result in output. We need to read and listen a lot in order to understand and communicate with others. In the book many good materials are introduced. Now I have been learning some of them. Mr. Lai Shixiong’s American English Pronunciation lessons are very useful and interesting. Mr. Lai points out many pronunciation mistakes of Chinese students. For example, “W” should be read as “double u”, not “da bu liu”. When I learned English, I listened to my teacher and the tape and read “W” as “da bu liu” by mistake. After I took Mr. Lai’s lessons, I paid more attention to the pronunciation rules of words. However, I’m still a little confused now, because I’ve learned British English in school, now sometimes I don’t know how to pronounce some words in American English, for example, ‘-o-’ and ‘-or-’ words. Now I listen to some English pods every day. These pods are short but interesting. I think interest is the best teacher. An interesting material will help students keep on learning. In each pod firstly a dialog was played, then two teachers would explain the words and phrases. Sometimes they would introduce the cultural background to help us better understand it. In the end, the dialog was played once again, and this time we may totally understand it. Also, it’s suggested that we should read more original English books. Then I began to read some books, and I have read “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”. I chose this novel because I like detective novels. Several years ago I have watched a TV series of Sherlock Holmes adopted by BBC. The actor Jeremy Brett exactly showed the character of Mr. Holmes. He was smart, proud, handsome and always thinking. Because I have watched some detective TV series before, I thought I could be a good detective too, and it wouldn’t be difficult for me to know the reason of every mystery. But in fact it wasn’t quite so. I failed to guess the reason except the “Speckled Band” one, because it impressed me so much when I watched the TV series. The difference between me and Mr. Holmes was the observation of the details. I easily neglected the details while he examined each detail carefully. What’s more, he was good at linking the facts with the news and his knowledge. When the links of things are connected and compared, the reason and result of a mystery are apparent. The stories were so attractive that once I read the beginning of a story about a mystery I couldn’t wait to read the end to find the reason.

A Korean TV series

2016-03-02

Recently I’ve watched a Korean TV series called’ Falling in love with Zhang Baoli’ or ‘I love Zhang Baoli’. It tells a story of exchanged life between a ‘princess’ and a ’Cinderella’. Miss Zhang was born in a rich family. Her family was known for the generation-by-generation traditional Korean dress making skill. When she was eight years old, she was run into by a car and the diver took her away to avoid the punishment. She lost her memory and lived with her new ‘mother’, who was the driver, for twenty years. Accidentally, the driver’s daughter—Miss Yan used Miss Zhang’s painting to win in a competition and Miss Zhang’s real parents supported her to study in the big city. Later Miss Yan was adopted by Miss Zhang’s real parents. In university, Miss Yan secretly bore a baby and left it to her mother and Miss Zhang. Miss Zhang was very kind-hearted. She brought up the baby and regarded her as her own daughter. Miss Yan tried to forget the past, and she wanted to live the rich new life. However, at last the truth was discovered. Miss Zhang became the inheritor of her grandma’s skill, while Miss Yan got the punishment. When a person tells a lie, he/she will has to tell more lies to cover the secret. In the TV series, Miss Yan’s mother wanted to get rid of punishment and Miss Yan wanted to win the drawing competition and study in the big city, as a result they had to tell more lies and made more mistakes. But one day others will finally find the truth, so we should be honest. I was also impressed by the introduction of traditional Korean dress making skill. Miss Zhang’s family was famous for the skill. They insisted on doing it totally by hand. Also, they designed it according to different customers’ needs and likes. People wearing it felt very comfortable and happy. In China, we have a lot of traditional culture and skill, if we can also introduce them in modern TV series as well as in ancient TV series, more young people will get to know the traditional culture and skill, fall in love with them and inherit them.

Recently the science community has been fascinated about the gravitational wave. It was observed by a research team for the first time. The team leader said that the possibility of error was zero. At first I was attracted by the sound of gravitational wave. It was a simple ‘poof’, sounding very naive. Then I watched a video introducing it and found the work very great. The theory of gravitational wave was proposed by Einstein. He assumed that an object would cause its near space distorted just like the case when we threw a ball onto a large sheet. As a result, other smaller objects would travel on a curly orbit around it and the attraction between the two objects is called gravitation. The gravitational wave is the ripple of the plane in the process of attracting between two objects. It is so tiny that it’s hard to observe it. Only in an acute universe activity such as the absorption of two black holes may it be observed. For a long time the research team has sent laser on four-thousand-miles-long fibers in two different directions and reflected it . Most of the time the received laser and the sent one were the same, but one day they luckily found a very tiny difference in both directions, which was later proven to be gravitational wave. If the laser was not affected by the environment, the result was encouraging. It was a powerful verification of Einstein’s theory and was helpful for further research. It reminds me of the famous sci-fi novel ‘Three Body’, which was written by Chinese writer Liu Cixin. It tells a story of outer space discovery. Mr. Liu supposed that there were lives on another planet. Because there were three suns on the planet, the weather there was irregular, and people can’t predict it. The civilization was often destroyed suddenly by the bad weather, which was either extremely hot or extremely cold. The story was based on the question of the gravitation between three objects. Until now the question has not been thoroughly solved and the law has not been totally found. The known universe around us, for example, the relation of Sun, Moon and Earth is the special solution of the question, so the travelling orbit and the weather of the Earth have been known. Since the gravitational wave has been found and more attention is paid to gravitation question, I hope that gravitation question of three objects will be discussed more and maybe some further results will be obtained.
