A study of language difficulties shows that Chinese only ranks in the 5th category of “Fairly Hard” as opposed to the “Extremely Hard” Polish language and Hungarian in the 2nd category of “Very Hard.”
I completely agree that Chinese is not that difficult; the most challenging thing is the infinite amount of characters and lack of an alphabet. However, the article states that when comparing Chinese intonation and Polish pronunciation that the Chinese tones are not as difficult, I declare completely false.
Having learned some Polish and a lot of Chinese, Polish pronunciation is very easy once you learn the rules whereas Chinese intonations are still extremely difficult for me after years of studying.
Some of my Polish couch surfers also explained the me that Polish grammar is extremely complex and that the average teenager is fluent in English by high school, but the average Pole is not because of the grammar. I'm no grammar expert, but she attempted to explain it to me and I was just completely confused. Chinese grammar on the other hand is rather easy even in comparison to English.

alright... you dont have to agree ^^ but the lack of conjugation was the hardest thing for me in english, because it may be easier to understand but harder to make sentences, because i felt the lack of suffixes as determiners.
I disagree. I think this study fairly evaluates all languages despite being written in English. You may argue the validity of using access as a variable, which is one of their main arguments for putting English in the easiest category. Otherwise I think they objectively analyze the difficulty of tenses, gender, alphabet, etc.
This wasn't what I meant when I said nothing about English language. The "study" is based on how English speakers think about the rest of he languages. PErfect tenses are hard to understand for example, and grammar can get confusing. Lack of cases or conjugation makes it harder to speakers of other languages (because it doesn't replace what you have in your native language) So this is still an English speaker's point of view, me feels.
This is what they had to say about English, "Basic to hard: English, no cases or gender, you hear it everywhere, spelling can be hard and British tenses you can use the simple and continues tense instead of the perfect tenses and you will speak American English. English at the basic level is easy but to speak it like a native it’s hard because of the dynamic idiomatic nature."
Very interesting study, but it's very "American" yet mentions neither English language nor Americanness. Hardship obviously depends on who decides on it, right? Trying to find out "the hardest language" is a weird attempt, adding "for English speakers" would solve the problem. The pronunciation or grammar rules which surprise English speakers can be quite easy to speakers of non Indo-European languages.
Yea, the grammar is particularly difficult I think, but of course, it comes naturally to me... I find teaching and explaining English grammar to be very hard.
I think the grammar is not very hard, but for some people the characters are very difficult. Personally, I think the characters are not so bad, but the tones are difficult.
