The Indian Ocean Conference is a major consultative forum involving countries concerned to discuss the potential of regional cooperation. The first Indian Ocean Conference was held in Singapore in 2016. About 2.5 billion people live in the Indian Ocean region, one-third of the world's population. About 90 percent of the world's crude oil trade passes through checkpoints in the Indian Ocean. India is also the fastest growing economy in the world. Along with strategic competition, China's BRI is bringing the Indian Ocean countries closer to China.
In 2015, India presented the Strategic Vision Sagar (Security and Growth for All in the Region -SAGAR).
This conference is going to be held with the slogan of 'Towards a stable and sustainable Indian Ocean' along with promoting connectivity, regional peace and stability as well as economic development.
India Foundation, Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Trade, Australian Government, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies Singapore and Perth USAsia Center are organizing the 7th conference in Perth, Australia from 9th feb.
Previously, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Maldives, UAE and Bangladesh have held this conference. Representatives from more than 25 countries will participate.
