the Most Shocking Pictures from the World Cup
2014-06-27

Protesters took to the streets of Brazil for months ahead of the World Cup - and the first day of the tournament itself witnessed widespread trouble as anti-government activists took advantage of the eyes of the world being on them.

CNN producer Barbara Arvanditis lies bloodied and semi-conscious after being caught in the crossfire between police and protestors on the opening day of the tournament. Arvanditis was in the middle of a melee in which police used tear gas and stun grenades to try and quell unrest.

No explanation from the pitch invader has yet been forthcoming, though FIFA is investigating several fans who blacked up their faces during the game.
