People cook the porridge specially to offer sacrifices to the divinities and ancestors to pray for bountiful harvests and auspicious events in the coming year on the day. Originally, the porridge was made with rice and red beans. Now, the main ingredients are various types of rice and millet and a wide assortment of nuts and dried fruits, all being very nutritious.

Weddings: The Chinese wedding banquet is truly a big deal. Getting married without hosting a giant, lavish banquet just is not done. It just isn't. It is a completely necessary part of a Chinese wedding. Luckily, Chinese custom also holds that each guest is suppose to give money in red envelopes to whoever is paying for the banquet (usually the parents).
