'No Dogs or Chinese' Sign

For many years it has endured as a particularly striking example of the demeaning, racist way that Chinese were treated in their own country during the early decades of this century. At a time when Europeans, and especially the British, dominated much of China, a sign at the entrance to the Huangpu Park in Shanghai supposedly announced: "No Dogs or Chinese Allowed."

We believe that those days are long gone.. but there are still some illiberal people holding such a ridiculous and arrogant discrimination and taking it as a joke.

ONCE AGAIN, the particular Spanish TV station Telecinco has broadcast a comedy show insulting Chinese people, following similar incidents last year and five months ago.

In it, Mauricio Colmenero, the racist and histrionic bar owner in the series, is annoyed that a Chinese person has opened a shop nearby. He graffitis a "No dogs" sign in the Bar Reinols, to make it read "No dogs or Chinese".

I don't see the fun of it...

In some ways, humiliating the Chinese community has become a means of survival for local media channels which are in a bad economic state..

It was not the first time this TV station has invoked the Chinese community. Five months ago ,it broadcast another comedy show that insulted the Chinese people and mocked the quality and service in Chinese restaurants.

A Spanish person plays the role of a buffoonish Chinese waiter dressed in a Tang Dynasty suit and skullcap. Wearing a long braid, he uses exaggerated expressions, such as bowing to welcome guests, slapping female customers on their butts.

Actors also blatantly shout "Este Chino es Gilipolla. (The Chinese is an idiot) in the play, make jokes about Chinese pronunciation, and imply that Chinese restaurants use cat and dog meat in their restaurants.

In April 2013, it broadcast a report about local Chinese restaurants, made accusations about their sanitation without solid proof, and even asserted with no evidence that human bodies were used in dishes.

When wrong, you should change. When you hurt other people, you should apologise. It is a commercial TV station and therefore perhaps only cares about ratings, so 180,000 Chinese people in Spain is a small enough audience to ignore. But just so you know behind these 180,000 Chinese stand 1.8 billion Chinese people from the world’s most populous nation and second largest economy!

You are very thin-skinned.

Chinese persons whom I know personally in Madrid got a good laugh out of it - they saw it as a joke, not an insult.

Chinese media, particularly some of the "comedy" TV shows make fun of foreigners and of some of their peculiar habits, so until your own media are pure and not making fun of Europeans, Indians, Africans or any other race or culture, get a thick skin and grow up.
