Philippine ex-President Joseph Estrada flew into Hong Kong to do two things.  First is to apologize for the bungling of the rescue of the 8 Hongkong hostages killed by a rogue police officer who lost his mind.  Second is to make reparations to the families of those killed.  And it is no small sum - 20 million Hongkong dollars - much of which was raised from the civilian community.  But beneath all this is a far greater objective - to salvage the goodwill between the people of Hongkong and China and the people of the Philippines.

Now, democracy activists in Hongkong should shut up if they intend to humiliate Mr. Estrada, because they only humiliate themselves and their country by speaking and acting rudely or superciliously.  Shut up, because they do not represent the kind-hearted Chinese people who can understand how a city government can be so inept as to lose so many lives it could have saved by simply taking out the hostage-taker.  There is a time for anger, and there is a time for forgiveness.

Now is the time for forgiveness, to show the Confucian spirit of the Chinese people.  The Japanese offered not even 1/1000th as much for their brutal murder of 35 million Chinese men, women and children, and Hongkong still gives Japan deferential treatment in trade, tourism and thankfulness.  Time to show some civility towards Mr. Estrada and the Filipino people he represents.  If Abe apologized without any reparations, the groveling running dogs of the democracy activists would have wagged their tails and barked their welcome a dozen times!

As if Mr Estrada can be "humiliated" - a B-movie ex-star not able to speak Engloish, who at one time ...

Ex-President Estrada cannot be humiliated, true, because he is humbler than his humiliators, as can be seen in the way the Philippine Catholic press had humiliated him.  And yet, because of his humility, it can be readily seen in this case, he accepted the guilt of all his countrymen, including that of his humiliators, in coming to Hongkong to ask for the forgiveness of the families of the victims of the kidnap-massacre four years ago.  All the high and mighty movers and shakers of Philippine politics and finance should be ashamed of what they did to him, considering what he has done again for his countrymen, trying to save the 150,000 Filipino men and women working in Hongkong from discrimination and mistreatment.

Isn't Mr. Estrada what a true Filipino really is?  He has his PERSONAL failings, but as regards his OBLIGATIONS to his fellowmen, he remains FAITHFUL AND HUMBLE to the end.  Would the Filipino people rather have Barabbas than their Estrada?

He should be re-elected president one more time.
