Hetian in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is famous for its high-quality nephrite jade, which is made up of tremolite. Hetian jade is mined from many places in the area, but mostly found around the Kunlun Mountains. With an increasing market demand for Hetian jade in recent years, business has been prospering and prices consequently have soared sharply. More and more locals are engaged in jade digging and mining, hoping to get a piece of the new-found wealth pie and build up their own family fortune.

Despite the bad environment, many Hetian jade diggers work non-stop in the mining fields. They don't know the jades they dig out can be sold to businessmen at a price dozens or even hundreds of times higher than that in their own hands.

The Almas Jade Mine is located on the Kunlun Mountains in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at 5,000 meters above sea level and with a history of 100 years. Donkeys are the only means of transport in this remote area. Yet donkeys can only climb up to an altitude of 4,000 meters; for the remainder of the journey, people can only rely on their own strengths.

The winters in Hetian are long. Farmers have little farm work to do during this season and therefore come to dig for jade in the Kashi River bed. Sometimes they take the regular bus at 7:00 a.m. to the mine; sometimes they rent a truck together. The truck in the picture is also used for jade stone transport.
