TIME FOR CHINA AND RUSSIA TO BACK A FAIR SETTLEMENT OF THE PALESTINIAN QUESTION|
The threat of the EU to impose trade embargoes on Israel unless it gives up the West Bank of the Jordan to the Palestinians hardly smacks of fairness and humanitarianism.
The West Bank measures 5900 sq km, and the whole of Israel measures about 27,000 sq km in size. Therefore, the West Bank is about 22% of the entire territory of Israel. How can one expect Israel to give up 22% of its land, given how small it already is, and given that the original Palestine Mandate was supposed to be East of the Jordan River, in present day Kingdom of Jordan, and all the land west of the Jordan River was originally to be part of Israel? While China must consider the humanitarian aspect of the Palestinian refugees, the best solution may actually lie east of the Jordan River in the ORIGINAL Palestine Mandate, where land is far more plentiful and the population much less dense or crowded. It takes a UN resolution to open up the debate, but why should every inch of land needed by the Palestinians come from the West Bank, when historically, they were entitled to settle the land East of the Jordan River? China can take a fair stance in this, balancing the security needs of Israel against the humanitarian housing needs of the Palestinians, and review the history of the British Palestine Mandate, and how it was revised, over and over again, until Israel was forced literally with its back to the Mediterranean Sea.
Although Jordan has been a friendly neighbor to Israel, the fact remains that its king was appointed by the Saudi kingdom, and is not indigenous to the Palestinian people, and thus labeling their land as the Kingdom of Jordan makes them look landless and stateless, when in fact, those living in Jordan are already living in Palestine.
Syria and Iran should also reconsider their knee-jerk hostility towards Israel, and think again. Both of these countries have ancient Jewish communities from Biblical times to the present day. They ought to know where the boundaries of Israel were. Why are Palestinian lands given to the Saudi's without any question, and every inch that Israel claims is subject to violent controversy? Read your own scriptures and know what and where is Israel in history.
Iran, of all countries, should know the good will that the Orthodox Jewish community have for it, from time immemorial to this day.
