Today, we read the first impressive headlines that show that the US has statesmen after all, who think first and foremost of their own citizens, rather than tie their fate to the Japanese, who are willing to turn all their commercial airplane passengers into human shields, and possible Kamikaze hostages, as they "challenge" China's air defense identification zone.  The US Dept of State has announced that all civilian airlines should inform China of their flight plans, for their own safety.  Now, this is true courage, and true democracy.  No machismo, just American lives, Primero Uno!

At the rate the Japanese are going, it would be only a matter of time before a Japanese plane "accidentally veers off course" into China's sovereign airspace over Diaoyudao, that will trigger an intercept by Chinese planes to escort it out of the area, which will provide the excuse for Japan to do another Mukden-in-the-Air and shoot down the Chinese plane on the pretext it is "protecting" its civilians.  There has to have been a big debate in the White House, and the world is all the better and safer for the victory of the statesmen who are now taking back the reins of government from emotionally overdriven China haters.

The point of the rules of reporting that China put out is to protect the civilian passengers on all airlines, regardless of country of origin, from being mistaken for being hostile military aircrafts, which China has experienced hundreds of times coming from the Japanese SDF that sends out a squadron of 8 F15's regularly on the approach of any aircraft from China toward its airspace over Diaoyudao, even if the aircraft is clearly unarmed.  These hostile aircrafts from Japan are what deserve the treatment China has prepared to deliver to them, not the passenger planes.  But Japan, for all its claim of machismo, hides behind a skirt of civilian air traffic while waving its katana every now and then.

The Geneva Convention also prohibits governments from intentionally making civilians serve as the human shields of their military forces, by denying them the proper means of being identified as civilians, and thus kept out of any military showdown.  The statesmen in the US government understood this principle.  The Japanese don't.  They are used to sending their peasant youths into suicide brigades, two and a half million of which they murdered in cold blood by forcing them to fight wars that do not defend their country, but merely add to the megalomanical ego of their leaders.  For this decision, America has gained the secret admiration of Chinese leaders, and this is a good way to introduce Vice-President Biden to China.

Welcome, Mr. Vice-President, hats off to you!

It is to the interest of US to show leadership in this region.....

US should show that despite it's many trade ties with China.....

That US can be relied upon to show independence and put China in its place.

This is the beauty of China's perennial Confucian ethic - do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you - it cuts through every religious and ideological fundamentalist crap.  It at once summarizes one's position and determines at the same instant one's correct action.  It sees no impediment in race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, as long as two peoples abide by this universal moral principle.  Everyone can be a friend, even an erstwhile enemy can become a friend on his or her acceptance of this simple code of conduct.

That's it.  Code of conduct that the Japanese should agree to observe in lock step with China over their disputed islands of Diaoyu/Senkaku.  No more intimidation with 8 F15's against a solo twin propeller patrol from China.  If Japan had observed Confucian conduct, and avoided its bullying hehavior, China would never have wanted to set up an expensive and time-consuming ADIZ.

But now, to ask China to rescind it without Japan doing likewise, and agreeing to sit down and negotiate with China over the sovereignty status of Diaoyudao, will not work, because such a deal would violate the hallowed principle of reciprocity that is the pillar of diplomacy from time immemorial.

China's conduct based on reciprocity is at once understandable, firm and yet flexible, providing fertile ground for a new foundation of Peace in Asia to be built upon.

Let he who lays the first brick cut the ribbon also.

All border disputes are resolved either via international arbitration or when the elephant in the room and the bigger power leads from behind and not lead by intimidation.
