Whatever delay there was in China deciding to help, it was mitigated by the delay in the delivery of care by other other countries to the victims at the site of the disaster.  In fact, Chinese aid in the form of surgery, medication, tents, blankets, clothing arrived on the ground faster than the monetary donations could be transformed into usable forms of assistance to the typhoon victims.  Going forward, the Peace Ark is becoming the equivalent of a General Hospital for the Typhoon Calamity Zone.

It is heartwarming to see China respond in this way, putting aside existing disputes over territorial sovereignty.  Vietnam can see this, and recently held a one-day celebration with Chinese youths to commemorate their long history of friendship in good and bad times together.

China may be stretched to the limit in defending her vast coastlines, numerous islands, and long borders, but China has found time to show kindness and humanity to its smaller neighbors, and that is something that all Chinese can be truly proud of.
