America is a great nation, one to have achieved superpower status that not even the British empire could boast of having achieved. And to say that is exceptional is not unreasonable. But, just as Alexis de Tocqueville commented, who originated this "exceptionalist" idea, America is a young nation, even up to now, compared to countries such as China, India, and even Japan, that have existed for ten, twenty, even thirty times as long. And when you are young, you are entitled to be "exceptional" in some way. As you get older, you tend to get less exceptional, and more like the dumb elders you have lived with growing up.|
As any country that has been around for a thousand years can tell you. There are limits to wealth. There are limits to miitary power.
And there are also limits to exceptionalism. And for this, there is no exception.
