The last time People’s Daily Online was on the receiving end of the overwhelming ridicules and laughter of the Chinese netizens was when it mistook The Onion’s satirical article of Kim Jong-un as serious news. This time, it brought even harsher derision on itself by launching a special column called “The Dishonest American Series” in which it aims to “provide a more objective picture of what the US and Americans are really like.”|
This new column, which published its latest article on May 22, came to the public interest two days later when it was posted on Weibo by many major official accounts of the Chinese media and celebrities, making it a viral news on Weibo, inducing a tide of negative responses left, right, and center.
In Chinese, the column, which could be found on the US channel of the People’s Daily Online website, is called “The Unethical and Untrustworthy American Series” (无德无信美国人), which is in fact much more caustic than the English version it kindly provided, for the sake of the American readers: “The Dishonest American Series”. After it became the jeering target of the Chinese, the Chinese name of the column was changed to “The American You Don’t Know about.” (你不了解的美国人)

The editors carefully pointed out in its introduction that by “dishonest American” they do not mean “all Americans”, and that they “want to provide a more objective picture of what the US and Americans are really like” by “unveiling some incidents and Americans they have encountered”. The reason for so-doing is because most Chinese people think of the Americans as “honest, reliable, and righteous”, which is “misleading”.
Reportedly there have been several articles published so far in the column which was created in March. But only the latest one could be found at the moment which tells a story of how the United Airlines staff insulted a Mr. Liu from China and refused to apologize. At the end of the article, the writer said a research showed that “the airline’s services and staffs’ attitudes are extremely poor. And their manner is worst when dealing with Chinese passengers”.
The majority of the Chinese are not buying it. While some expressed their worries about the “sanity” and “dignity” of the country, most people found it so ridiculously funny that they used it as a good excuse for taunting the authority and lashing out on the social ills.
@澹澹_寒波: LOL! People’s Daily has just found the best word to describe itself!
@曾da的_炟: Well, the White House has the petition, we have People's Daily's column!
@五浊恶世末法时代: This country is going insane!
@rong668_668: How stupid! If this was North Korea, there might be some people who will believe them. But come on, will any Chinese actually buy that?
@dangdangyu7: Is it People’s Daily’s way to get the relatives of the Chinese officials to immigrant back to China?
@CivilNet: I am worried that the Chinese officials are sending their children to such a place.
@泠州之吾: With sh** all over itself, it rushes to clear up other’s mess. How despicable!
@enhancedkkbsh: The Chinese are only allowed to have the "China dream", so first of all they have to dash the American dream.
@糖果快化了: Is this to get back at Biden? It changed my view of the "official media" once again.
@仙草_NeverGrowOld: Oh the poor “unethical and untrustworthy Americans” are living in hell where people poison people. They eat toxic rice, drink polluted water and breathe air that is choked with dirty stuff. Their vegetables and fruits are grown with highly poisonous pesticides. Their government exploits its own people. Their “naked officials (裸官, a term referring to the Chinese officials who are in China by themselves with their wives and children and money sent abroad) send their wives and children and whatever sex partners they have to China. Their righteous Democratic and Republic party cannot save such an unethical and untrustworthy country.”
