Format of the contest: Anyone who wishes to enter the competition is required to translate a short Chinese passage into English. Click on the “I want to join” to join the activity and simply reply to the thread to post your entry.

Duration of the contest
: This contest series will be a weekly one. Normally we post the story on Monday for translation and will announce the winner on the next Monday.

Panel of Judges
: expatter, col, ratfink, LoneAcorn. We have invited a panel solely made up of native speakers or proficient English speakers to comment on every entry and select the winner of the contest.

Deadline for Entries
: 10 am every Thursday.

“目前,中国社会的总体信任进一步下降,已经跌破60分的信任底线。人际不信任进一步扩大,只有不到一半的调查者认为社会上大多数人可信,只有两到三成信任陌生人。”前不久,中国社会科学院社会学研究所的社会心态蓝皮书《中国社会心态研究报告2012-2013》发布之后,引起社会各界强烈反响。在一些专家看来,要想挽回社会诚信,必须依靠建立健全法律法规、严格执法,提高违法成本。

Report says severty percent of people couldn't trust strangers

“At present, the overall trust in Chinese society has further dropped to the bottom line with no more than 60 points. Distrust has further expanded among people with less than half of the respondents feeling that "most people can be trusted" and only about 30 percent trusting strangers. "The Blue Book of Social Mentality 2012-2013 that was released recently, has aroused strong repercussions in the society. According to some experts, in order to restore social integrity, we should build a sound system of laws and regulations, ensure strict law enforcement, and increase the cost of law violations.

Distrust continues to expand among people with less than half of respondents thinking that most people can be trusted and only about 20 to 30 percent would trust strangers."  The Blue Book of Social Mentality 2012-2013 recently released by the Institute of Sociology under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has aroused heated discussion in the country. To restore social integrity, says the experts, the government should establish a sound legal system, stengthen law enforcenment and increase the cost of law violations.

According to the experts, a sound legal system, the strict law enforcenment and the added cost of law violations are needed to restore social integrity.

Analysis: 70% People Don’t Trust Strangers


“In Chinese society the current level of mistrust has deteriorated to below 60 points, a new record.  As this general distrust of people expands less than half of the respondents to the poll indicated that most people can be trusted.  Only 20% to 30% of those polled claimed that they would trust a total stranger.”  The findings of a recently published Blue Book of Social Mentality: A ResearchReport on Chinese Social Mentality 2012-2013 by the Institute of Sociology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has provoked strong reactions from all walks of life. It stated that a sound system of laws and regulations, tough law enforcement and more severe penalties are required in the building of an integrity society.
