Moving faster than a brisk walk using any multi-wheeled contraption in any congested city can lead to injuries which overcrowd hospitals nationwide. Any emergency room or local clinic  will attest to overcrowding due to these simple factors.

Cause? The general public is uneducated in the dangers of mass meeting mass. The dangers and injuries from push bikes alone create life eduring scars and inuries alone. Add powered bikes and the deadly 2 thousand kilo automobile-truck and bus missles the odds are every citizen can admit they know personally someone who was involved in flesh meets metal in the past 30 days.
I met a 70 year old woman recently who walked too close to a car while it was moving which ran over her foot. Result? Surgery and 12 month rehab produced a 45,000 yuan hospital bill partly paid by insurance  and the family left paying a majority of the remaining bill.  The driver has since disappeared. This woman was unaware the car would hurt her by walking across the street. The driver was not really at fault per say...the car was stopped near an intersection and the was in a hurry to cross the street.

Isolated incident? Yes, one of a million isolated incident's each year occuring in China. Pedestrians and drivers alike are not educated in vehicle safety. The driving schools do not educate the driver in safe driving. There is no license needed to drive a pedal or motor bike. That means there are 600 million Chinese moving faster than a brisk walk which can injure and maim a person without organized education in responsibilities they carry when riding a bike like they WALK. Straight ahead vision with no care to their surroundings.

Vehicle drivers are using this same mentality on the new roads. In any metropoliton 20 kilometer radius there is a crash of some sort every 5 minutes. Two minutes in rush hour. ROAD RAGE in China has increased dramatically in the last 5 years. The increase is growing faster than the Gross National Product.

Education is the key factor. This starts at home from day one. Educate the youth for the future safety of millions of Chinese.
Deny drivers license to those 60 years and older (exceptions can be made). Ninety five percent of those have no experience behind a wheel of a 2 thousand kilo bullet and should not have the ability to use a car which is a weapon.
Teach new drivers DEFENSIVE driving techniques....not negotaiting techniques.
Clamp down on drivers without license. It is estimated 20% of those behind the wheel of a car next to you have no legal right to drive a car.

China does not need more casualities. Make the roads safer by education--which begins at home and or in the schools. I would agree that education is not the entire answer....there are many educated idiots. But it is a start. Keep people out of the hospitals and clinics which drain the local and provincial finances.
