Mr Jones and Mr Smith have $10 each.  They go looking for a car to buy.  They see a car for sale and the price is $20.  So they put their money together and buy the car.

The salesman in the car showroom puts $15 in the company safe, $3 in his pocket, and gives his secretary $2 and tells her to buy herself a box of chocolates.

But, the secretary knowing how unscrupulous the salesman can be does not buy herself the chocolates but contacts Mr Jones and Mr Smith and refunds them the $2 back.

So if they get $1 each refunded, the car only cost them $9 each (remember, they originally paid $10 each for the car).

$9 + $9 = $18

Plus the $3 in the salesman’s pocket equals $21

Where did the extra dollar come from?

You are all correct

The answer to the question:  Where did the extra dollar come from is - the question is not relevant, but you have to admit that at first glance it does look quite an oddity.
