The Chinese markets are down this morning maybe for just this reason , China needs to revamp their infrastructure because everything in this story is connected with transportation and it should be a clarion call for transportation restructuring, like rebuilding the whole bridge and transportation connections roads etc.  The modern transportation system knows how many trucks, how much each weighs(under load) and where they have started from and where they are going ie. good route planning.  Under this pre-investigation remark the roads might collapse!

It's terrible to read of such events as they put China in a very bad light internationally.  However with that said blaming overloaded trucks is simplistic in the extreme as it makes no sense, nearly 100m of road collapses with only 4 trucks on it. Does that not smell of hastily made up excuse?

I'm sure there are forumites who are structural or civil engineers but my understanding is most bridges or elevated roadways are constructed to carry far more weight than the would normally carry even with overloaded trucks.

This smells more like poor construction techniques and or cost cutting on material quality. One of the things that many countries in the West learned the hard way was that building construction work is a fairly specialised job and employees must be well trained and supervised. Perhaps it is time for China to consider uniform licensing and training standards along with suitable testing for construction workers.

Regardless of the causes it's a grim event for China and not good publicity

There is truth and I'm sure you criticize too harshly no matter what, I'll still be singing; " what if this had happened in an earthquake? " this is to enlightened and criticize the Chinese who have been very open and very transparent with their "news reporting".

The fact is the bridge collapsed under normal conditions.  It is obvious there were both design and construction flaws.
