A foreign teacher who tossed a five-year-old girl into a hotel pool could ensure that close scrutiny of expats in China won't end anytime soon.

A police station in Jinan, the capital of China's eastern Shandong province, said on its official account on Sina Corp.'s Weibo microblogging service that the teacher worked at the Shandong University of Finance and Economics and that the girl wasn't hurt. It said the teacher, which it identified as a New Zealander named Phillips, had apologized and paid unspecified compensation.

Still, accounts of the incident surged this week on themost-searched-topic list of China's Baidu.com search engine and on the Sina Weibo microblogging service, putting a spotlight on negative sentiments towards foreigners in China.

'Why can such foreign trash become a teacher in a Chinese university?' one comment read.

Sentiments against foreigners have been stirred by a number of recent events. A British man was beaten after appearing to sexually assault a Chinese woman in Beijing in early May, followed by an online video of a Russian cellist cursing a Chinese fellow passenger on a train.

Chinese officials have responded with tighter regulations on foreigners in China. The city of Beijing pledged to 'clear out' illegal foreigners by launching a 100-day campaign in May.

A new law on the control of the exit and entry was approved by the Standing Committee of National People's Congress last Saturday, which tightens the visa issue system and reinforces management of expats living in China, in an effort to tackle the problem of 'foreigners entering, living and working illegally,' according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. I am glad that at least there is an admission that foreigners with their bare feet on someones seat, drunk on top of women in flower beds, and throwing other people's children around in swimming pools is the normal order of the day in China .........

Just a shame that the media see fit to highlight this with their media spies on trains, subways and swimming pools  ...........

And shame on the Chinese media for noticing those thousands of tweets and finally publishing what the rest of the Chinese population already knew  ..........

Reading this comment I feel Chinese expect foreigners to be saints !

We're human, sometimes we have a bad day, sometimes we're selfish, sometimes we're unfair.

Chinese people should not expect us to be more than what we are, mostly good folks, just like Chinese people (who can also have a bad day or be selfish or be unfair).

personally, i think most foreigners in China are suspect, but the foreigners image in China is quite popular. it certainly doesnt help that foreigners are plastered all over billboards, and adverts. the popular foreigner reputation relies heavily on deceptive advertising, otherwise, people would just see foreigners for the parasites that they are. l dont have a problem with foreigners in their own countries, just foreigners in China trying to exploit and do other dubious activities
