Disaster brings us together

The rainstorm on July 21, the worst in 6 decades, left 37 people dead and caused traffic chaos in the capital. However, it helped discover love and kindness among people in Beijing. Underneath the Guangqumen bridge, there was a “tug of war” for life – many people were rescuing a driver trapped in the storm with a rope in their hands. The residents from Wangjing area organized a volunteer cars' team to pick up those helpless passengers at the airport for free. The city's sanitation workers were  busy cleaning out clogged drainage. Their impressive stories made us deeply moved.

Sanitation workers acted as "human road signs" near the Beitaiping Bridge, standing in deep pools and guiding vehicles to evade manholes, as a lot of manhole covers were pressured out by underground water to nowhere.

Docai, a Weibo user, organized a voluntary car team in the Wangjing community to give free rides to the travellers who were stranded at the Beijing international airport due to the cancellation of flights.

Li Fanghong, a police inspector in suburban Fangshan District, lost his life while trying to rescue villagers who were trapped by the floodwaters. Li was fatally electrocuted by a live wire that had fallen into the water late Saturday afternoon. He rescued 63 people in the village of Fenghuangting before being hit by the fatal shock.
