Boys only class in Shanghai stirs debate

(chinadaily.com.cn) A high school in Shanghai set up a boys only class, in order to better address the "boy crisis" in schools, sparking a heated debate, Beijing Times reported Tuesday.

Shanghai No 8 Senior High School set up an experimental boys only class and started recruitment on April 18.

Girls outnumber boys in many schools because they get better test scores, and many boys are said to be losing their masculinity. This is becoming a social concern, according to media reports.

The boys only class aims to allow boys to fully realize their potential, said schoolmaster Lu Qisheng. "Some curricula will be specially designed for boys to explore their potential."

Voices differed on the issue, with some approving and some opposing. Do you approve of single-sex education?

Pro view (3)

Yes. It is a worthy experiment to tackle the \'masculinity crisis\' among male Chinese youth. And single-sex schools are common in Western countries, such as Eton and Harrow in England.

Con view (10)

No. Single-sex education deprives teenagers of the experience of communicating with the opposite sex and hinders their healthy psychological development.

I think mixed education is better, kids can grow more aware of the gender differences. In nay case, when I did the military service in Spain, in those times, only men were allowed in the army and it didn't create any special problem either.

Your reply reminds me of my military school days when few girls are enrolled by the school. Boys are out on weekends just to catch a glimpse of girls. It's weird.

Single-sex education is not good to girls and boys.

Ever been to a single sex school?

It's not as detrimental as you might think, generally the academic standards are higher as there is less distraction once puberty hits. The downside is that it takes longer to socialise and be familiar around the opposite sex.
