But the truth is, many of the things we eat or even inject as medicine would be totally unappealing if we knew how
they were really made.
Penicillin has often been called one of the 10 most important discoveries of the 20th century.
It has saved countless lives. Yet it starts out as a disgusting bluish green mold that grows on rotten bread
and on dirty walls. Should be do away with this wonder drug just because it seems terrible when it starts out?
It starts out as mold, it ends up being injected into your body. I'm not sure what the point of the OP is...
Above is penicillin mold both on walls and on a forgotten sandwich. Commonly found in soil, food, grains, paint,
carpet, wallpaper, interior fiberglass duct insulation, and rotting vegetation. Penicillin can cause hypersensitive
pneumonitis, allergic alveolitis, and asthma in certain individuals. Common species include P. chrysogenum,
P. citrinum, P. janthinellum, P. marneffei, and P. purpurogenum. Penicillium infections are common among individuals
with immunosuppressed disorders. Penicillin is used extensively in food processing. It is used in the creation of
Camembert, Roquefort, Brie cheeses; to improve the flavor of sausages and other meats and to control the growth of
other molds in the food making process. It is also widely used medically as an antibiotic in treatment of various
Penicillin. How it was discovered by accident.
The story of how penicillin was found never fails to fascinate. Alexander Fleming chanced upon penicillin
by accident after he realized how bacteria in the Petri dish he cultivated got wiped out by mold. He later
isolated the sample of the mold and identified it as Penicillin notatum. Later on, Howard Florey and Boris
Chain purified the compound, thus producing the first form of antibiotic.
