If I asked you to say ghoti, how would you say it?

Clue: It swims in the sea.

Some of the peculiarities of the English language are used in this imaginary word.

If we take the gh as in rough, or tough we say ‘f’
Next we take o as in women, we say ‘i’
Next ti as in station, we say ‘sh’

Say them together and we get F-I-SH

So GHOTI is pronounced FISH

Not really, as there is no such word in the English language – but this little joke highlights just some of the peculiarities of English.
