Shanghai Art Museum
Although the Bund contains the lion’s share of Shanghai’s neoclassical designs, arguably the most impressive is the Shanghai Art Museum in People’s Square. This beautiful brick building with a clock tower once formed part of the main stand at the old racecourse.

Indigenous architecture
The city’s unique indigenous buildings – shikumen (stone-gate houses) – can still be found in the quiet lanes around north and west Shanghai. These buildings, a meeting of the Chinese courtyard house and English terraced housing, made up 60% of the city’s housing between the 1850s and the 1940s.
