Rather than punishing, it should be to find out the cause for poor grade.

Poor grade is not related to ability to achieve in LIFE!

One may add the scoping objectives of education are 3+4+1 C's.

When small, conditioning, consensus and control.

When older, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

When adult, convergence.

This is like miniaturization of microchip circuits. It depends on the energy spectrum of the lithographic laser. Far end of ultraviolet is the new game (tsmc, samsung). But what if 'energy' is 'redefined'?

There are rules and regulations in each and every society. Abiding or breaking these rules may lead to suitable rewards or punishments respectively. It depends on the level and justification of the punishment. If it can be justified and there is no alternate way to resolve the issue at hand then a suitable punishment may be undertaken according to the acceptable social norms.
In this case I do not agree to the punishment as I was once punished the same way and as a kid it was not a good lesson for me.
