Li Chengqun, 14, tells the story of her life in a shack in Ganshui town of Qi county, Southwest China's Chongqing municipality on Sept 18, 2011. Li has just entered a local middle school but her mother does not know this as she left the home four years ago, due to mental illness. Li's father died of illness in 2009 and she now lives with her sister, uncle and grandmother. The whole family is dependant on her uncle's farming work as her grandmother is too old and fragile to work. Li said she was very sad when her father died, but she didn't want her grandmother to hear her sorrow so at night she hid under her quilt to cry. Li helps with family chores at weekends when she comes home from school. Li said she believes she can change her fate by studying hard. "I had a dream that I can be a nurse when I grow up. If I could have removed hurt from my parents, they would not leave me then," Li said. [Photo/Xinhua]

China has 1340 million people, which is greater than the combined population of the following 10 countries :

   U.S. (312 million),   U.K. (62 million),  France ( 66 million),  Russia (143 million),  Japan (128 million),
Germany (82 million),  Italy ( 61 million), Canada (35 million),  Spain (46 million),  Greece (11 million).

The average standard of living of the people in each of the above ten countries is much higher than the average standard of living of the Chinese people.    Yes, it is higher even in the present economic conditions in these countries.

China has enormous problems of various kinds besides the huge population:  Earthquakes, droughts, floods, pollutions, power shortage, water shortage, poverty in the countryside,  etc.

For hundreds of years, the common Chinese people have been suffering.   Can China take good care of its own people to raise the living standard of its people?

A primary school student squats down to have lunch as there has never been a canteen at his school in Chongqing's mountainous rural areas since it opened in 1992, due to lack of funds. Some students buy simple food and snacks from stalls at the school gate, near where heavy trucks pass by. Other students, some of whom can't afford lunch, choose to eat at home after class. The school head teacher has recently announced a plan to build a canteen and dormitory next year.
