Luckily the alarm was just an emergency drill - but the royal guards did not know this.

The King of Norway, Harald V. When an alarm at his palace is sounded it is to signal that a member of the royal family is in danger
'Some guards were hiding under the beds,' said Major Roy Tore Ottesen, deputy commander of the King's Guard.

'I must stress that double the number of guards who needed to show up, did so,' Ottesen told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.

Mr Ottesen also said that the guard management had found out the names of guards who were hiding when the alarm went off and that these guards have been questioned.

The news has outraged serving and retired officers from the respected royal guards unit.

'This is just horrible,' Nils Egelien, a King's Guard veteran told Dagbladet.

'If they are really part of the preparedness troop, they should have nothing to do with it.'

It is the duty of the royal guards to watch and protect the royal residences (the Royal Palace in Oslo and the prince’s residence at Skaugum) and  Akershus Fortress in Oslo.

It is yet to be decided what will happen to the guards as punishment.

The royal palace would not comment on the incident.
The current king of Norway is  Harald V. He succeeded to the throne upon the death of his father Olav V on 17 January 1991.
