China became the world’s largest energy consumer in 2009, surpassing the United States, which held the title for more than 100 years, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The recession took a toll on U.S. industrial output, adding to a decline in total energy consumption that was almost 5 percent below 2008 levels. The United States leads the world in oil consumption, consuming more than twice China’s level, but China leads the world in coal consumption and hydroelectric capacity, using more than twice the U.S. level of coal and having more than twice the U.S. hydroelectric capacity.

so far not too many chinese like to turn on their AC and heating unit or even some home appliances like microwave, frigerator, etc just imagining if they do...hopefully not gonna BLACKOUT like what we had in newyorkcity

In 2010, China surpassed US first time for output of power generation.

Great achievement.     But China’s population is 1350 million, whereas the population of the U.S. is 305 million,  so the per capita output of power generation of China is about 1/4  that of the U.S.

Often we hear about power shortage in China.   China has a long way to go to achieve self-sufficiency in power generation.   
This is not easy to achieve, due to some short-sighted policy.   For example:

1)   After a  more modern and efficient coal-power plant is put into operation, the authorities shut down an old  coal-power plant.
      ( I think the old one should be shut down only after China has achieved sufficiency in power generation)

2)        China produces nearly 40 percent of the photovoltaic cells in the world, but more than 90 percent of its products are exported.

( Why China doesn’t limit the export of photovoltaic cells so as to meet its own needs? )

3)   Miao Wei, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology  once remarked that  China should not build too many wind power  plants because wind is always accompanied by sand in China and the equipment will erode quickly. He also said that in other countries, the situation is different because they don't have sand in the wind.
(  I wonder if he had traveled to all parts of China and the world  to have made such conclusive statements
.  ……always accompanied by sand?   Even it is true, then he should have recommended that the equipment be shielded as much as possible. He should also have suggested that the wind-blades should be coated with suitable material to prolong their life.
But instead he recommended that wind power is not suitable in China!)

China is more densely populated.  It has a better public transportation system than the US.  Therefore, it will only take one more doubling of the per capita energy usage to achieve a fairly high level of development.  At that point, it will have matched the Western Europeans.

China electricity output is almost 2X or TWICE that in the American Republic!

It's quite an achievement!
crude oil consumption is however only 50% of USA.
this is only due to China being a "growing market" while USA is a "saturated market".

In January, 2011 both Brazil's and China's car sales increased in over the same period in 2010.
China has 1 in 8 car ownership and moving towards the 1 in 4 car ownership level by year 2020! (meaning a car in every family level)
