He probably meant amphibious assault vessels such as those used by the USN. Really, bigger means a bigger target and greater losses if sunk/shot down etc. Being out of range of shells from coastal artillery batteries is no longer applicable in this day of BVR and SSMs etc. I'd imagine speed and stealth would be far more of an advantage.
