These cars were built for the American consumer, the rest of the world still didn't even know how to drive (and quite arguably the Chinese still don't).

The big cars were made for cruisin' and had soft suspensions, unlike the German cars which kept their suspension stiff, something they could get away with since they made the smoothest roads -- the Autobahn still has about twice the under-layment of anyone else -- that is a smooth cruise, the suspension didn't really matter.

Consider the average American probably has a minimum of 600,000 miles of driving experience! Many have at least a million miles or more of driving experience. I would estimate that I probably have somewhere between two to three million miles of experience in no less than a dozen or more very different automobiles of which I had owned, from nearly every Japanese, American and German manufacturer. The Volvo was my most recent favorite -- I waited forever for them to come out with either FWD or AWD and some horsepower!
