We lived through such ugly times and that's something that should never be forgotten. ---Yang Xianhui, the author

By Peng Yining

Some 2,500 people perished in a Gansu Province labor camp named Jiabiangou between 1957 and 1960 – mostly of starvation – Yang Xianhui says.

About 500 survived, by cannibalism. They foraged for undigested potato chunks in human excrement or worked their way through the internal organs of corpses. Most dead bodies proved so skeletal as to be inedible....

Confessions of death camp cannibals
Source: Global Times
[00:12 November 02 2009]

By Peng Yining
---------------------------
In this article by Peng, I think the headline is misleading. Who made confessions?

The author Yang Xianhui committed crimes? No, he made research, interviewed some survivers and wrote it in fiction style. He said:" It was also smarter to fictionalize the experience and avoid censorship, he admits."

[So far, so good, he says. No official has banned his book yet or summoned him for a "chat".]

No banning by xx means confessions by xx? How'd it make sense?
-----------------------------

In a Chinese review by Qian Liqun, he mentioned then
the“reform-through-labor system: each month's grain ration had to cut and save up some. There were actually more than 10,000 catties grain in the warehouse. But the higher authority still issued orders repeatedly--Do not use the saved grain to rescuee those in labour camp. The reason was "not to against the party's grain policy".

When it came to human lives and so-called party's policy, the authority chose the later.

When I was a child I would get scolded by my mother for not eating my food.  I would get 'don't you know there are people starving in china!'
But the scolding made me feel so bad, there was no chance for me to finish my food.  I felt too guilty for eating.  Starvation extended beyond camps  right?
Wasn't there a famine? <excuse my ignorance>
