No Apology For Great American Massacre of Natives?

For all American Aboriginals of the Americas, this is a sacred area. This is the place where the promise of a people died while fleeing from a genocidal US military unit hell-bent on liquidating the continent of its Indigenous population. There has never been any official apology offered for this massacre and the military awards bestowed upon the genocidal aggressors involved in this conflict still stand, as does a physical monument in honour of the US Army killed during Custer’s “last stand” against a defiant and united Indigenous resistance to their own demise.

Glorious human rights in US

Read the most glamourous human rights record of the US..

[and its refusal to sign or ratify...]

The report also points out the deliberate US flouting of international human rights covenants. Washington has either signed but not ratified or refused to sign four major UN covenants: on economic, social and cultural rights; on the rights of women; on the rights of people with disabilities; and on the rights of indigenous peoples.

matthew,

I see you are quoting lakota sources.  Did you know about their move towards independence a couple years ago?  Rus Means spearheaded the movement.  Look it up.  Very interesting stuff.
I was really hoping they would move forward with it, but tribal leaders put a stop to it.

Very interesting stuff - yes

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Lakotah

A group of Native Americans called the Lakota Freedom Delegation traveled to Washington, D.C., on 17 December 2007 and delivered a statement asserting the independence of the Lakota from the United States. The group argues that the recent declaration of independence is not a secession from the USA, but rather a reassertion of sovereignty. Their leader is Rus Means, one of the prominent members of the American Indian Movement in the late 1960s and 1970s.

The Lakota Freedom Delegation does not recognize tribal governments or presidents as recognized by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, sometimes referring to these groups as "stay-by-the-fort Indians".[2]

...

Lakotah's founders cite the Oglala 1974 Declaration of Continuing Independence:

The United States of America has continually violated the independent Native Peoples of this continent by Executive action, Legislative fiat and Judicial decision. By its actions, the U.S. has denied all Native people their International Treaty rights, Treaty lands and basic human rights of freedom and sovereignty. This same U.S. Government, which fought to throw off the yoke of oppression and gain its own independence, has now reversed its role and become the oppressor of sovereign Native people.[29]

...

The groups cite several reasons for its assertion of sovereignty, all connected what they refer to as the "colonial apartheid" of the reservation system in the United States. The group claims that control by the United States has led to massive unemployment, poverty and disease among the Lakota people and also alleges that 150 years of US administration is responsible for the statistical poverty of Lakota lands. The group claims that withdrawal from the United States will reverse these problems as well as help reestablish the Lakota language and culture.[34][35] The group also claims persistent violations by the United States of their treaties with the Lakota.

Another longstanding point of contention between the Lakota and the United States is the status of the Black Hills of South Dakota, which were part of Sioux reservation lands until they were taken without compensation by the US government and opened for gold mining following the collapse of the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868).

I was really cheering them on and hoped that they would follow through on this.  As I said before, the tribal leaders shut it down.  Rus Means has no authority in the Lakota tribal matters.
I think part of the problem is many of the deals that have been made with the US government, makes it harder for them to break free - creating a sort of dependency.  American indians do get goodies from the government like free healthcare.  Withdrawing from those treaties would end all that and people could potentially suffer if they lose their safety net.   And also, if they regain their territories (as their right) - what to do with all the people currently living on those lands.  We're talking 3-4 different states that would be drastically effected.  If they are going to do a move for independence, they better have all their ducks in a row and a real plan for the people to make it work without inciting violence.  I wish the best for them.  I hope that they do come up with a solution.
