Could someone please justify the Chinese obsession with this dish.
Thank you.

1)Shark fins have texture...but the soup relies on other ingredients to provide the flavor.

2) Joe, how would you justify the looming extinction of an entire category of fish ? Tasty is a good reason to you? This is not food for the masses either. This is not an economical food source. Logic is needed here...

tekvicious

It's not difficult to read a book, shark fin is aphrodisiac and give symbolic energy in chinese medecine conception.

The most important is to mention that if all chinese people decide to taste this expensive dish wich was reserved to rich chinese before, shark will then be over of our planet very quickly, so it's necessary to educate people to make them understand that scientist estimate that 80 percent of big fishes have already disappeared from the sea, including shark. it could cause ecological disaster different but disaster too, exactly as the amercian who eat imported beef, as japanese who eat whale, or chinese who eat bear or rhino.

I want someone to say it... rhino horn...bear gall bladder...tiger paws...monkey hands...sharks fins...etc...
All B.S. that is costing the planet a LOT in non renewable resources.
These are not cows or pigs, these are not prolific animals, they are not domestically cultivated.
People that eat these shark fins etc... have NO conscience.
I believe the whole world condemns whaling except Japan and Norway, and people are actively trying to stop them.
China is a HUGE country... as Chinese get a bit more money they should be careful what they do with it. Afterall, if you are a HUGE man, you must watch closely as you walk through the flower garden lest you trample things.
