Kiwi,

It seems more like an embarrassing gesture. Once, at a council meeting where I was waiting to speak in favor of casinos, some woman started her speech by apologizing to the people there for what her ancestors might have done. I was not only embarrassed, I was livid that this woman thought anyone in the room needed her apology and felt personally demeaned by the idea that I or anyone else might be stoking some old grudge in the back burner of my mind; especially one requiring an apology from her, who had nothing to do with it.

I sort of  agree with 'interesting' that the Japanese ladies made an embarrassing gesture; but I still think there is something "nice" about it.

You can't really apologise on behalf of other people even if they are close to you. If they are not sorry, you can not be sorry for them. These ladies had no significant involvement with the Imperial Japanese Army of 60 and 70 years ago and no Japanese government officials authorised them to make an apology.

Still, there is something "nice" about what they did.  I guess there is some value in saying "these were my people and I feel really bad for for what they did, it was so wrong".

Yes, I agree partly with ronglimeng and seneca's points.

Some Japanese elders has realized their ancestors' sin, but their apology are depressed by government.

Japanese youths even have no access to know this era of history since their history books were re-edited.

The government is to blame. Japanese government should pose like the women in picture.
