He isn't a bad author, but he has an issue with introducing too many characters.... ultimately leading the reader to remain disassociated with the main one's plight.  

In lies the rub - because other than a couple of his books - Ruled Britianna and that joint work with Richard Dreyfuss - he usually does not have a 'main character' in mind.  Best analogy I can think of is the Robert Altman series of films with emsemble casts.
