Misunderstanding from different culture you get prejudice.
Misunderstanding from different appearance you get racism.
Misunderstanding from different governing ideology you get politics.
Misunderstanding from misinterpreted facts you get hatred.

Add those to human ignorance!

I have been associating with Chinese people, culture and other aspects of the existance of China for about 5 years now. What I do know, is that I do not know much about such a complex land such as China yet, in my small community I would be considered an expert on the subject of China.
That reflects the extent of knowledge people here have about China and that is little to none. In the cities, it  is not much different.
    WHY?
I can only speak for what I know to be true. Life here is not much different from life in any other country. People are occupied with the daily process of work, family, trying to cope and the mundane stresses that become the focal point of people's daily life. The only news people hear is from the liberal one sided and often agenda driven media. This is a big world we live in and in general, people will seek out news and information that affects their daily life, family and their circle of friends. As an example, the people around me know more about Islamic Jihad than they know about China. The reason is simple. That is what they find in the news paper, radio and television.
I spend at least an hour reading Chinese news and a little more reading Asian news. Most people around me will not take the time to search out the specific subject of Chinese news. More likely, they will (if at all) seek out news from western countries and often those countries of their own heritage. An example of this would be an Irish heritage family would tend to take notice of Irish issues. The same for French, English, Spanish, Greek, Italian and all the other countries of the world that make up the American population. Americans are a blend of every country in the world and even the Chinese people here read less news about China than I do. Life is complex where ever you go.

I really doubt that prejudice, racism, politics, hate and all the other seemingly pointed issues fall into place on this subject. Few people will take the time to search out the facts when they hear something about China on the news. They simply don't have the time and must trust the media to inform them truthfully with the true facts and not editorialize the information given to the public.

Most of the men I associate with work a 10 to 12 hour day. No time to research and focus in on world issues.
Most of the people I know have families who require significant time to serve the family needs. More so if there are school age children involved in activities with the school.

I have lived in other western countries as well as Asia and the fact is, no one really has the time to address specific issues about East, West or any other location. The common people in Asia only know what they learn from the media just as any other average citizen in any other country. So in reality, it is not so different.
