I wonder that what strengthen your anti-west sentiment?

are you Westerner? and should we pay homage to your self-criticism?

are you Chinese? and did you have the experience of being distained by west?

thank you !

Whampoa's a bit of a mystery--she almost never talks about herself; no one knows where she is, how old she is, or what (if any) experience she has with the West outside of Chinese tourists. However, the fact that she mostly posts on here between 2 and 5PM Eastern Standard Time (US), which would be 2-5AM Beijing time (kind of unlikely) makes me think she's probably either somewhere in Europe or the US. If she is in the US or Europe, then she's got glasses on that filter out anything good she may see from the West. If she's actually in China, she's woefully ignorant of the world outside of her blinders. Nothing (especially when discussing huge groups of people, like countries) is ever entirely good or entirely bad, but from her generalizations, she evidently can't see this rather basic fact of life.

Let me continue ....

West is accused of double standards on female circumcision

By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor
Published: 17 July 2006

A leading doctor has accused Western plastic surgeons who perform cosmetic surgery on the vagina of undermining the battle against female circumcision in other parts of the world.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, Ronan Conroy, senior lecturer at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, says the growing acceptance in Britain and elsewhere of so-called "designer vaginas" was exposing Western double standards.

"The practice of female genital mutilation is on the increase nowhere in the world except in our so-called developed societies," he writes. "Designer laser vaginoplasty" and "laser vaginal rejuvenation" are growth areas in plastic surgery, representing the latest chapter in the surgical victimisation of women in our culture."

At least three London clinics offer "vaginal tightening" after childbirth, "cosmetic vaginal surgery" and "labioplasty" - reduction of the size of the labia, advertised on the internet. Some British women travel to the US for treatment, which is carried out by gynaecologists specialising in reconstructive surgery, using a scalpel or laser.

One woman, Rose, who was worried about changes to her vagina after the birth of her baby, flew to Los Angeles for treatment.

"I didn't feel confident with my body," she said. "I understand that women come in different shapes and sizes but that's not how my body was made and I wasn't comfortable with it."

She said the first 24 hours after the surgery were a "living nightmare as she endured a painful and sleepless night thousands if miles from home. She returned to Britain a week later and is happy with the result.

The World Health Organisation defines female genital mutilation as: "All procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural, religious or other non-therapeutic reasons."

Mr Conroy writes: "It is Western medicine which, by a process of disease mongering, is driving the advance of female genital mutilation by promoting the fear in women that what is natural biological variation is a defect."

There was an assumption by Western critics that in the developing world the practice was forced on young girls. In fact, it was often welcomed as the mark of entry into adulthood and they were proud of it, he said. "The high moral tone with which those in richer countries criticise female genital mutilation would be more credible if we in the North had not practised and did not continue to practise it," he added.

Researchers from Stockholm say, in a separate study in the BMJ, that girls and women subjected to female genital mutilation in the developing world were frequently inaccurate in reporting what had been done, and often minimised it.

Although many families abandon the practice when they emigrate, in the UK studies suggest there are 3,000-4,000 new cases each year.

Oh my God!

Who knows, "bound" feet might be next in vogue.

But for western women with such BIG FEET, tough order.

but not unimaginable!

Teenager drowns in beach tragedy
The accident happened on Whiterocks Beach at Portrush

A 15-year-old boy has drowned after getting into difficulties in the sea close to Portrush in County Antrim.

The boy was playing with a friend at Whiterocks Beach on Monday afternoon when it happened.

A man in his 60s who went to help the boy also got into difficulties and was taken to Coleraine Hospital. He is said to be in a satisfactory condition.

Gordon Munro from the Coastguard said the boy got into trouble after being caught by a tide-rip.

"The tide undermined his feet and he must have been tumbled away underwater," he said.

Surfer Darren Eccleston said he rushed into the water to help
"He was recovered from about 2m depth of water by lifeboat crewmen."

Surfer Darren Eccleston was on the beach when the accident happened.

"We immediately ran over and started paddling out to see if we could see anything in the water," he said.

"It was quite choppy and we just couldn't find anything."

East Londonderry UUP assembly member Norman Hillis said the tragedy "highlights yet again the real danger the sea can present even when the weather is fine".

There are strong currents which can easily take swimmers into danger - I would appeal to people to be extremely careful in the water and only use designated areas which are patrolled by lifeguards," he added.

Coleraine Borough Council had launched a beach lifeguard service on the beach at the beginning of this month.

That last article is a bit of a non sequitur from you... what's your point?

Also, I think you need to consider all the good things going on in the West. In my home state, for example, there's a program called the Fresh Air program, which brings inner-city kids from places like New York City out to the countryside for a while (2 weeks? Maybe more?) so they can experience things that they don't get in their normal lives. They get clean air, big backyards, local foods, and new friends.

My high school for a while was involved in something called Project Harmony. For a couple of weeks each year, high school students from Bosnia-Herzegovina would stay with host families with kids their age. They saw the high school, went to the state capital and talked with local-level politicians (including a neighbor of mine), and visited other places of interest in the state. My family hosted two girls, one of whom was Serbian, the other of whom was Croatian. They had different backgrounds in many ways, and it seemed likely there would be tension, but they shared the same room and the same bed in our house. I won't forget the morning they came down and said, "We talked very long last night about our religions, and realized they have more in common than we thought." And if they'd never been in the program, they may have never had the chance to make that discovery.

And this is all just within a half-hour of my house... So yes, while there are some less-than-savory aspects about the West, there are good things, too. Take them both in stride.
