About Shanghai

Shanghai, with a land area of 6,340 sq km and a population of 17 million, is a world-famous metropolis and an economic, cultural as well as science and technology center of China (or is a metropolis of world class and a center for economy, culture, science and technology in China).

Society and Culture

Shanghai is a top contestant of Beijing in claiming the title of China's cultural center (or a top competitor of Beijing for the title of the cultural center of China). While Beijing boasts a rich heritage of history (or has the advantage of being rich in heritage and history), Shanghai is known for a culture that is receptive to the influence of other cultures (or is best known for its capability to accept and assimilate foreign cultures). This gives the city a more cosmopolitan touch.

What makes Shanghai particularly attractive are the different styles of architecture throughout the city (or A rich variery of architectural styles is spotted all over the city of Shanghai). Part of Shanghai (or The city) was once divided into different "concessions" or districts by foreign powers and the {boundaries of these areas still remain today} [stark contrasts in architectural style tell tales of these old day's concessions]. The newest area of the city, Pudong, symbolizes everything that is new and exciting about Shanghai (or Putong is the newest addition to the metropolis, where the most exciting development in economy is happening). Two of the most impressive city structures (or Two of the city's most distinctive landmark buildings) can be found {here,} [there:] the Jinmao Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.

The everyday language in the city is the Shanghai dialect. A large number of people speak mandarin. (or Although many local people can speak Mandarin, the daily language for communication is Shanghainese) Shanghai is one of the few cities in China where you will surprisingly find many local Chinese speaking quite good English.
