I cleaned up the passage a little. Hope you don't mind, worldperks:
But, if he lived today, it might very well be that he would run into some problems when sitting for a college entrance exam, competing for a spot in a graduate school, or taking a so-called "TOEFL  test."  I'd be concerned, in particular, that he might fail his political economics exam, which might come about as a result of his “unthorough reading,” for sure.

"would he very likely run into" → If you think it is likely, you usually frame the rhetorical question as "Wouldn't he very likely run into…" or "Isn't it likely that he would run into…?" (You're sort of inviting the reader to rebut the obvious, from your point of view.) But I think it works just as well saying "it might very well be…" (I'm not a big fan of rhetorical questions in writing, actually.)

"troubles" → distressing or difficult circumstance or situation. It often has the connotation of "emotional distress" whereas "problems" could just mean "difficulties" or "obstacles." (You could just say "run into trouble" but it still sounds a bit more alarming than the situation warrants.)

"come about" → happen

"unthorough" is, well, a little odd. I'd have to know a little more about Tao Yuanmin's philosophy of reading to get the wording right. I'm not sure if it means "superficial" or "pain-free" or "reading for pleasure" or something else…

"might…for sure" → Well, you can make an argument that something "might" come about and, if it does, then x is the reason "for sure," so I'm not so convinced that that particular phrasing is inherently contradictory—although someone can question it. ("For sure" is somewhat colloquial so the sentence has a conversational ring to it.)
Really, I don't.

Without being pedantic, he had a passion for learning. Whenever a hidden meaning dawned upon him, he would forget his meals in an ecstasy of delight.
( from the complete works of tao yuan ming translated by Tan Shilin)

Let's use another way to think.
