Silicon Valley is overrated. I worked there for 36 years.
Most employees in silicon valley have to sign an agreement before they can be hired that
hands over all their inventions and ideas to the company. Nothing could stifle creativity
more than the wholesale stealing of ideas from employee's minds.
If one happens to become a good idea the ones who profit most are the vulture capitalists
sometimes called venture capitalists.

The only real innovations in the US over the past 100 years as far as electronics goes
were the invention of the transistor and it's close cousin, the integrated circuit, and
other basic solid state devices such as the diode and its derivative, the LED.
All the others were just extensions of those few primary inventions.
Software would still be primitive if the only thing it could run on were circuits
made of vacuum tubes.
The rest of the world can add to those extensions just as easily as the US.
If capitalism promotes innovation and creativity then why aren't scientists and artists the richest people in a capitalist nation?

China’s State-directed system of innovation is too conservative with too much focus on adopting old technologies from foreign countries instead of creating new technologies. Take the auto industry. China has prioritized the manufacturing of gas-powered vehicles by entering into joint ventures with foreign companies who are reluctant to transfer their latest and greatest technologies. So China ends up paying for old technologies which makes China vulnerable to politically-motivated accusations of so-called IP theft. It would have been better if the State had prioritized electric vehicles and then started developing the indigenous technologies for local brands instead of opting for gas vehicles and then importing old technologies from reluctant partners.

China should abandon this old model of adopting foreign technology and instead create a new model of innovation based on developing indigenous technologies for emerging industries.

Focus on the new not the old. Let others do the job of making old stuff (gas vehicles) while China should concentrate on building new stuff (electric vehicles).

I don't buy "cheap Chinese products", if I have a choice. Least of all in the West. Maybe in Chi ...

I'm not surprised you think only good grape juice and ethanol can be produced under the direction of westerners.
Westerns also came up with your favorites, Night Train, Thunderbird, and MD 20/20.
You keep leaving the bottles inside the paper bags behind though.

Mostly it is exactly these cheap (an subsequently low quality) products that westerners want to bu ...

Why do Westerners buy cheap stuff from China? Probably because they don’t have the money to buy expensive Western luxury brands from Europe.

But Chinese consumers don’t want to buy cheap stuff from China so that’s why they buy expensive Western luxury brands from Europe.

Because of this demand, Chinese companies now want to make expensive luxury goods for the Chinese consumer market.

What?

So tame today? So lame!

Is it tame to admit that wine is nothing more than grape juice and ethanol?
