Japan has problems with its aging workforce which will cause quality problems as they retire en masse.
Japanese companies have fallen behind their competitors in markets such as consumer electronics where they used to reign supreme.
Japanese consumer electronics brands such as Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc. used to dominate world markets in TVs.
But that's no longer the case as South Korean and Chinese consumer electronics brands now make up most of the top ten TV brands.

I agree. I've witnessed the decline of once mighty Japanese electronics brands. Just imagine a decade ago, Japanese brands such as Sony, Panasonic, or Sharp have been used to show off one's social standing, but those days won't come back with Chinese products catching up.

Yes. Smartphones have made digital cameras which Japanese companies dominated in the past all but obsolete. Same with internet TV which have made DVDs that Japanese companies invented no longer necessary. By the way, Sharp no longer exists as an independent company as Foxconn bought them out. The only Japanese consumer electronics brand in the top ten TV brands worldwide is SONY.

The problem with Japanese electronics companies is that they're only good with the hardware  manufacturing but not software technology. That's why there are no Japanese equivalent of Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Huawei, etc. But the next-generation consumer electronics and electrical appliances are going to become "smart" devices embedded with AI and connected to the Internet/Cloud. Same with electric vehicles, robots, drones, etc.

The USA is the world leader in software/Internet/AI/Cloud technology but US companies do poorly in hardware manufacturing. As a global player in both hardware manufacturing and software technology, Chinese companies have a good chance of becoming the world leaders in next-generation "smart" devices because these two industries are converging in China.
