RE: EU members abstain
The UK has suffered a humiliating defeat at the United Nations general assembly in a vote over decolonization and its residual hold over disputed territory in the Indian Ocean.

Why would EU members abstain while the majority by a margin of 94 to 15 voted for it!

Among EU members who abstained were France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, Greece and Finland. Canada and Switzerland...

Only 174 states took part in the debate but only 15 sided with the UK. That sends a clear message to the British government that the UN expects the UK to bring this relic of the cold war to an end.
The fact that Diego Garcia was used by the CIA after 9/11 in rendition and interrogation operations may have alienated many states from the UK’s cause.

Update:

One of the Chagos Islands - Diego Garcia - is home to a US military base...

In 2017 UN vote only 15 sided with the UK...
In 2019 vote in the General Assembly in New York, 116 states were in favour and only six against, a major diplomatic blow and a stinging defeat for Britain ...
The US, Hungary, Israel, Australia and the Maldives – voted in favour for the UK and 56 abstained.

Mauritius says it was forced to give up the Indian Ocean group - now a British overseas territory - in 1965 in exchange for independence...
The UK bought the Chagos island group in 1965 for 3 million pounds, creating a region known as the British Indian Ocean Territory...

From 1967 to 1973, the islands' entire population was evicted to make way for a joint military base with the US, which is still in place on Diego Garcia...
US planes took of from the base to bomb Afghanistan and Iraq and CIA used it as a 'Black site'.

Mauritius would allow the US military base to continue operating in accordance with international law, if it were given control of the islands... Could one imagine uncle Sam having a watch dog on the Chagos Islands - Diego Garcia ...

Best part is: The US and its sidekick UK do insist that this is an issue between two Countries involved; while in other cases the 5 eyes MUST be involved

An India sits there quietly........

I will never blame India for anything...

Being the second most populous country as well as labelled as the most populous democracy in the world is just the Western way to keep them down...

Else, the seventh largest country by area and with more than 1.3 billion people, would get much closer cooperation with China...

That of course would be an unimaginable nightmare for uncle Sam...
