Whatever is happening in Turkey makes every Thanskgiving an occasion of happiness and gratitude.  Not being a Turkey is enviable.  Erdogan is lighting a fire in Syria that could provoke a major conflict between the West and Russia, even if both sides are trying to avoid it.  But of course, the victory of either side is not Erdogan's aim, even though in the process of their engagement, Syria is likely to be destroyed.  In actuality, the destruction of the Kurds is a far more important objective of his recent statement that Turkey's objective is to topple the Assad regime, a statement that is music in the ears of the Western alliance, which can then be lured into joining in his battle against Assad and inevitably, against Russia as well.  Putin must have felt betrayed, but not likely surprised, if he is as intelligent as the world thinks he is.  The contingency of a Turkish betrayal of Russian interests would most likely have been factored into his preparations in the Middle East.  Erdogan's aims are understandable, but his method of achieving them, by provoking a war between the West and Russia in Syria, to destroy Assad, while he cleans up the Kurds stationed in northern Syria, does not appear brilliant or well thought out.  In this equation, the conflict between the West and Russia might be resolved by their united incursion into Turkey, which guarantees their not having to duke it out between themselves, while they secure their hold on the Levant and Middle East in the same breath.  If this were a game of chess, Erdogan might have outsmarted himself and started a combination where he becomes the loser instead of the winner.  Turkey might end up becoming another Syria, unwittingly.

It's high time the EU developed an independent approach to Russia. Stop dragging in the US. Make your best deal with the Russians. The best future for both Russia and the EU is to join together. Then, they would truly become a "great power": and a match for both China and the US. But without unity they will remain second rate. Of course, upon joining a revitalized EU, Russia would become democratic in fact as well as theory! It's the only sensible future for the Russian people.

Erdogan believes he can successfully provoke Russia to attack its forces, which then allows Turkey to demand that NATO come to its rescue, doing battle with Russia, while Turkey wipes out the Kurds, and if possible, the Assad regime as well.  He feels Russia will be forced to attack Turkey if Turkey attacked Assad, and that NATO would ignore its provocation, and instead make use of Russia's counter-offensive as pretext to go to war with Russia over Syria.  He really believes Russia has no choice but to hit back at Turkey, and that NATO will then equally have no choice but to hit back at Russia.  In the end, he envisions Turkey triumphant over all the contending forces in the Levant.  Common sense dictates, however, that Russia and NATO are far more likely to fight over Turkey, than Syria, and thus, the outcome would not be pretty for Turkey, not at all.

By betraying Russia, Turkey has isolated itself completely, and if its forces in Syria should be crushed by the Syrian government's forces, nobody would shed a tear or hide a smile.

We do NOT "dsrag in the U.S.A." - it is the bloody U.S.A. that is meddling in border areas such  ...

The "meddling" in Ukraine was just as much European as American. And it was not as intrusive as Putin claimed. The Kiev rebellion was quite spontaneous: not instigated by either the EU or the US. What do you imagine the US would ever gain by destabilizing Europe? (Just more money wasted on defending Europeans who scrimp on their military budgets and sponge off the US!) It's the Europeans who vetoed a Russian entry into NATO after the end of the USSR. That was the big mistake. It can still be corrected - and it's up to the EU to take charge - not the US. Europe's only decent future is to swallow Russia.
