HOW DUTERTE CAN TURN DOWN AN OFFER OF MILITARY VESSELS AND LOAN FROM JAPAN, THAT HE SEEMINGLY CANNOT REFUSE WITHOUT APPEARING UNPATRIOTIC TO THE PHILIPPINES - ASK JAPAN FOR AN EQUAL OR BETTER ECONOMIC PACKAGE THAN CHINA'S -- AND TELL THE WORLD THAT FILIPINOS ARE NOT BEGGARS TO THE RICHER COUNTRIES.  TO ACCEPT THE JAPANESE OFFER IS TO LOSE THE CHINESE BONANZA.  DO THEY TAKE FILIPINOS FOR FOOLS, TO KEEP A JAPANESE PENNY AND LOSE A CHINESE DOLLAR?

DUTERTE CALLS JAPAN "A SPECIAL FRIEND, CLOSER THAN A BROTHER", WHILE CHINA CALLED THE PHILIPPINES A "BLOOD BROTHER".  THIS SUMS UP DUTERTE'S CHINA POLICY IN A NUTSHELL.  FIRST, HIS FOREIGN POLICY AS REGARDS JAPAN IS WRITTEN FOR HIM WITH WORDS THAT CONTRADICT HIS RECENT STATEMENTS IN CHINA, WRITTEN BY SOMEONE WHO IS "CLOSER THAN A BROTHER" TO JAPAN.  HARD TO THINK OF ANYTHING THICKER THAN BLOOD, EXCEPT FOR MOLTEN GOLD.  SECOND, IF CHINA IS BROTHER TO DUTERTE, AND DUTERTE IS CLOSER TO JAPAN THAN A BROTHER, THEN DUTERTE PUTS JAPAN WAY AHEAD OF CHINA IN HIS PRIORITIES, WHICH MEANS THE BOND OF BROTHERLINESS HE EVINCED IN CHINA ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY.  CHINA SHOULD THEREFORE REGARD THE 24 BILLION DOLLAR DEAL BASED PURELY ON BUSINESS PROFITABILITY.  A MAN'S WORD SHOULD BE HIS BOND, AND IF IT ISN'T, IT ISN'T.  BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.

So? Finally you seem to learn your lessons, albeit incompletely.

If Rodrigo Duterte likes the J ...

NO, IT WAS CHINA THAT CALLED DUTERTE A "BLOOD BROTHER" AFTER HE REVEALED HIS GRANDFATHER WAS A CHINESE IMMIGRANT FROM THE PROVINCE OF FUJIAN.  BUT THAT IS WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE NOW.  HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE BROTHER TO CHINA, AND PREFERS THE BETTER-THAN-BROTHER JAPANESE.  SO BE IT.  NOTHING IS GAINED IF NOTHING IS LOST.  CHINA SAW THE TRUTH EARLY ENOUGH TO AVOID BEING ENTANGLED IN SO MANY DEALS AND LOANS WITH SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT VALUE HIS BROTHERHOOD.  THERE IS NOTHING TO SAY, REALLY, ONLY NOTHING TO DO.  CHINA SIMPLY HAS TO ACT AS IF THE DUTERTE VISIT NEVER HAPPENED.  CHINA NEEDS TO CONTINUE TO DEVALUE THE YUAN IN ACCORDANCE WITH MARKET DEMAND, AND EVERYTHING WILL TURN OUT FINE.
