The 2016 Olympics have been tainted by revelations of a massive state-sanctioned doping program run by Russia. The entire Russian track and field team was banned from the Olympics as a result; athletes still participating – such as the Russian swimmers – have faced hostility from both crowds and fellow athletes, with the Russian men’s 4×100 freestyle relay team loudly booed when they emerged in the arena for the finals.

What do Russian transgressions have to do with Sun Yang? Nothing – and everything. During the Cold War, the USSR’s state athletics machine churned out high-achieving athletes, apparently by any means necessary. It’s all too easy for China, with its huge state-sponsored sporting apparatus, its all-powerful government, and its questionable past, to be categorized along with Russia as the heir-apparent to that large-scale doping. And that Russia was recently found to be guilty of just that only reinforces those suspicions.

Funny how USA sports media never mentions the USA has cheated at least 11 times since 1968 and China ...

Seriously? Chen Xinyi failed her doping test a week ago.
Between 1990 and 1998, 28 Chinese swimmers tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, almost half the world total of drug offenders in sport.

Just a few "notable individuals":
Yang Aihua - Testosterone use.
Sun Yang - Trimetazedine use.
Wu Yanyan - Anabolic steroids.
Li Zhesi - EPO (erythropoietin) use.
Stupid people are like Glowsticks. You want to snap them in half and shake the crap out of them until they see the light.
I love sarcasm. It's like punching someone in the head ... only with words

I would ask how much drug testing goes on in non-Olympics sports events in China ... I would guess ...

It's hard to know, there are supposed to be international drug testing "standards" for athletes but as the recent Russian debacle has demonstrated it's not impossible to avoid local cheating.

I'd be more in favour of all athletes being tested every 2-3 months unless they have retired permnently from the sport.  Furthermore, add 100% competitor testing at the start of the event (ie Olympics) and again for all who place in the top 5 spots in each event.

Scrutiny of an athletes doctor or medical team should be mandatory if an athlete fails a drugs test.
These illegal substances don't miraculously make their way into an athlete without the intervention of someone with medical training.

If an athlete fails a drugs test, the other athletes using the same medical team should also be scrutinised as it would be naïve to think that a doctor would only try enhancing the performance of one athlete in their care.

Chen Xinyi is a young swimmer and would not be afforded her own doctor, but would be more likely to be using the swimming teams medical team.
Why no scrutiny of the other swimmers then?

Yeah right, and yet the doping list from America was even lengthier and more amazing -- Armstrong and sprinter Marion could escape detection and punishment for so long that both instances showed the prevalence of doping in American athletic programs.  They could get away with it because they had biotechnological advantage compared to the rest of the world.

Cheating is all over the place in international competitions.  The Russians cheated even during military maneuvers amongst 'friendly' competition -- the Chinese team members were issued nearly-dysfunctional weapons made in one of the former Soviet republics (one of the '-stans') which became jammed during competition.  Several targets didn't light up when they were supposed to after being hit during tank maneuvers.  That's why they won only 2nd and 3rd places during the previous competitions, and only this time in 2016 are there some first-place wins.

As for the U.S., I had always suspected that some of the women sprinters such as Marion Jones and others were using drugs, but could not prove it until years later.  They looked too masculine, especially when you look at their faces.
