"The impact of a Sino-US confrontation would be global.
Sino-Russian defence cooperation would intensify.
The One Belt, One Road project will link China with Europe through Russia, reducing American influence.
In the Middle East, China could align with anti-US states.
Africa could divide between Western and Chinese blocs.
In Latin America, Mexico, Brazil and some other states may be open to closer relations with China to challenge American domination.
The Sino-US economic relationship, including cross-border investment and their trillion dollar trade, would decline sharply, slowing growth in both countries and the world economy and possibly igniting another global economic crisis."

But, look at the map. The entire South China Sea is NOT within China's "territorial waters".

What is "territorial waters"? They are waters surrounding a country's territory. If you just assume that China mainland is the only territory of China, then you are right. However, the disputed islands have been navigated and explored and lived in by Chinese since ancient times. Assuming there is no dispute of the islands, the "territorial waters" of China would include the South China Sea. Proximity cannot be used to justify sovereignty of the islands because there are examples where certain island countries like Indonesia have sovereignty over islands that are nearer to Malaysia or Singapore than Indonesia mainland. By your logic, these islands should belong to either Malaysia or Singapore.
More research into the background (historical) would enlighten you further on the actual cause of the dispute.

The USA Empire of Chaos won't last for long, with or without another Cold War.
The South China Sea dispute is a red herring to divert attention away from US foreign policy failures:
In the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and now Southeast Asia.
The USA itself is already descending into a state of anarchy whose civil society has all but collapsed.

HUMAN history is replete with wars after wars, even after wars to end all wars.  To imagine that somehow, this generation is the brightest and the most peaceable generation is unrealistic.  We should never want war.  But war is part of human history.

Realistically speaking, the next world war will be worse than the one before it.

Other generations waged war with the most powerful weapons at their disposal, the weapons have changed, they are more destructive, so destructive in fact that their brutality index might have dropped in the conventional sense of being associated with pain and suffering.

But people, and human nature, have not changed.

It is not weapons that wage war, people do and will continue doing it, sadly.
