The Philippines is obliged to accept the ruling which invalidated its own so-called "Kalayaan" claim which preceded UNCLOS by several decades. UNCLOS doesn’t deal with territorial sovereignty and can't be used to negate the "historic rights" of claimnant States such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei to the offshore islands in the SCS dispute. The legal effect of this ruling is to negate its own "historic rights" to the offshore islands in the Spratly Islands which is the legal basis of its own so-called "Kalayaan" claim.
