The lessons of racial, religious and political harmony were learned early on in the civilization of China.  Confucius taught, "Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you."  Confucius did not say, "Love your neighbor as yourself," which is asking for a lot more than human beings can naturally give.  In this imperfect world where others are not always lovable, it is nonetheless necessary to preserve peace and order, that one does not do to others what one does not want others to do to oneself.  If this principle were practiced, none of the events in the past two weeks would have happened.  Failure to learn this Confucian precept by use of reason and conscience only postpones the learning of it by tears and tribulation.
