What century are you living in?

An interesting phlosophical view on the value of self-reliance (large % of pop in agriculture?). But if mechanization/robotics decreases need for human agri-labour what to employ surplus workers on? My solution is to "employ" humans on social service jobs like helping the elderly with chores, teaching, etc. There may not be any true danger of unemployment if we redefine what the desired products of employment are. And the economy could still have a large capitalist (free market) component - namely for all but the essentials of life. With increasing wealth the appetite for "luxuries" would sustain a capitalist economy. The abolition of poverty by a combination of 1. Population reduction and 2. Mechanized/robotic superproduction could result in a world population of about 3 billion humans - all having a "middle-class" lifestyle.
