Yeah, sure. The people starving were dreaming of having nukes for their country.
In 1962 my wive's ...

What Robert meant was that China had to spend 40-50% of its GDP on defense and heavy industries to defend itself against the U.S.A Empire which waged two genocidal wars against East Asia: Korean War and Vietnam War. China was actually exporting food crops to the Soviet Union in exchange for industrial and defense technologies which was cut off after the Sino-Soviet Split in 1960. So the geopolitical environment indirectly caused the famine due to the need to allocate scarce resources for defense industries instead of infrastructure development and agricultural modernization which were badly needed in a post-war China devastated by almost a hundred years of imperialist exploitation, opium-addiction, gangster-capitalism, civil wars, etc.

Under the military protection and with the economic aid of the U.S.A., Japan and Western Europe had a much easier time rebuilding their economies which had free access to the vast market of the U.S.A.

There's more to the Chinese story than just stupid nonsense being promoted by Western propaganda.

That's a myth. The reality is that the U.S.A. has a good record in sending billions of dollars of WEAPONS disguised as foreign aid, all paid for by U.S. taxpayers.

The passing of time makes statistics more suspect, not more accurate.
The passing of time gives more opportunities for revisionist history. Something the west is infamous for.

There are statistics that show both population and life expectancy DOUBLED from 1949 to 1976. So th ...

There are statistics and there are other statistics. Lots of Chinese statistics heralded during the Great Leap Forward about massive increases in crop yields were totally ludicrous lies and homegrown propaganda that even a village idiot wouldn't believe. It's similarly very difficult to give credibility to any statistics from this era about population and life expectancy when so many millions of Chinese were dying during periods of famine, crop failure and the hoarding of farm production. Even today many officially published Chinese satistics are better treated as unreliable guesswork such as the population sizes of major cities.

The great leap forward happened 1958-1961 and even the Chinese see it as a great failure and a hug ...

I see all you western propagandists have it wrong.
During the Great Leap Forward food was actually being exported to the Soviet Union.
The Soviets never offered aid to China as the OP's happy ignorance believes.
A nuclear weapon can't be ordered from Sears and Roebuck. China had been exporting food to
the Soviet Union for the previous decade in exchange for nuclear technology and materials.
This is the sacrifice the Chinese endured to obtain the ultimate deterrence from western imperialism.
Mao saved China for the Chinese people.
