          The Travelling People

Now, I'm a freeborn man of the travelling people
Got no fixed abode, 'mongst nomads I am numbered
Country lanes and byways were always my ways
I never fancied being lumbered

There was open ground where a man could linger
For a week or two for time was not our master
Then away we'd jog with our horse and dog
Nice and easy, no need to go faster

Well we knew the woods and the resting places
And a small bird sang when winter time was over
Then we'd pack our load and be on the road
They were good old days for the rover

All ye freeborn men of the travelling people
Every tinker, rolling stone and gypsy rover
Winds of change are blowing, old ways are going
Your travelling days may soon be over
-------------------------------

Yer man, Luke Kelly, used to sing this quare and well.

All persecutions of any nations are disgraceful.

They travel all around the world with  ...

I love the wagons.  I had Roma neighbors in the US, they used mini-vans instead.  More practical, but not as lovely as the wagons!  Thanks.

There is a good book about the Gypsies titled "Bury me standing" by Isabel Fonseca. A very good read and good research. Yes, the gypsies originate from India and still retain many of the practices and even parts of the language. They have borne sustained racism against them for a very, very long time and managed to survive until now. That alone is a commendable achievement and an example of the resiliency of the human spirit.
I once heard an English lady say something very interesting 'There is a bit of gypsy in all of us. Only we don't live it fully.'
